MATCH REPORT | SCHOLARSHIP | HULL FC

Read about how Steve Fox's Scholarship side were defeated by Hull FC at Laund Hill.

It was a second home defeat to opposition from Hull in 2024, as the Huddersfield Giants Scholarship side fell to defeat by Hull FC at Laund Hill, 22-34.

The Giants started fastest, scoring in the opening minute off the back of a Hull mistake, with Lewis Jagger dummying over. A strong 20 minute period from the visitors came off the back of this as they took a strong foothold in the game, racing away to a 4-22 lead before The Giants ended the half with their own purple patch, with two tries from Francis Appleyard who stepped back against the grain to score and Harvey Barker, who gathered a loose ball from a Hull error to dive over. 12-22 at Half Time.

The away side reasserted themselves at the start of the second 40 however, A try within the first five minutes followed up by another score off the back which had them leading 12-34 before The Young Claret and Gold scored the try of the evening, with lovely quick hands down the right edge, which had the ball ending up with winger Daniel Shepard. Lightning speed took him round the outside of his winger before stepping past the fullback to score!

An electric finish to be sure, Harvey Barker grabbed his double not long after with a juggled finish to make it 22-34. Harvey Barker was then unlucky not to grab a hat-trick as he broke down the right edge but this would be how it finished with the game delving into a scrappy affair in the final 15 minutes.

Head Coach Steve Fox added his thoughts on the back of the defeat.

“Personally I thought in the first half we came out slow. We needed to have more intent in D and win some Rucks, we lost too many of these allowing Hull to play a bit too fast really. However I’m really pleased with the responses, especially from the interchanges.

"We seemed to get more of a grip in the game, we started to win a lot more first contacts and collisions, when we got in good ball off the back of this we posted some nice tries and some decent points on the board.

"What killed us was after this we seemed to shoot ourselves in the foot and come up with an error in the resulting set, every time we got ourselves back into the arm wrestle we came up with an error which is disappointing but we’ll learn a lot from today. Hats off to them (Hull) for their performance and how they played. You know they came here to play and they beat us in certain areas, mainly around the ruck but like I said we will learn a lot from that today”.
